| Compounds of Three Words |

Compounds composed of two words are widespread, everyday commonplaces. Those formed of three words are far less common. Here is a list of those I have found. Where the etymology is not trivial, a sketch of it is given in brackets. There are surely more triple (or more) compounds, which I will add as I find them.

Note that several of those (e.g., longshoreman, notwithstanding) were formed when one word was joined to another word which was already a compound. If we allow compounds formed thus, we should note that "woman" originated as a compound, back before "man" had aquired its male specificity and just meant "person". "Woman" derives from "wiman", which derives from "wifman", which is a compund meaning literally "woman person". If "woman" is allowed as a compound, then there are innumerable triple compounds formed by adding one more word, e.g.
