This page gives a list of all pairs I could find that are linked by
"and" (or "&", "et", "und", etc.). Many other people or things are
coupled (e.g. Cinderella and Prince Charming, Sears and Roebuck, hip
bone and thigh bone), but unless they have come to be commonly
identified as "[one] and [another]", they are not in this
list. I have arbitrarily limited the phrases to five words, so you
will not here see such worthy examples as "a day late and a dollar
short" or "praise the Lord and pass the ammunition." (This
requirement is relaxed for the trios near the end.)
The list is sorted with common (in the sense of uncapitalized)
words first, followed by proper names. The latter are further
divided into: Titles of artworks, Brand and company names, Names
from myth and folklore, and Other names. This is followed by lists
of trios and lists of phrases separated by "or" and "but".
Sometimes, phrases might fit into two or more of those sections, but
they are put only in one, so if you are checking if a phrase is
present, use your browser's search feature. The lists are sorted
more literally than librarians sort; in particular, "a" and "the"
are alphebetized the same as any other words.
Where alternate versions of the phrase are given (as with "bacon
and eggs, eggs and bacon"), the more common expression comes first,
as measured by Google's Ngram Viewer for 2019. The definitions are
meant simply to give you an idea of what the phrase means, not to
satisfy lexicographers. Many entries have more meanings than I have
noted. A tilde inside a quote in the definitions refers to the
entire and-linked phrase. For example, under "beck and call", the
"at one's ~" in the definition should be read as "at one's beck and
call."
Acknowledgement must be given to AcademicKids.com, whose
encyclopedia has a "List of famous pairs". Most of the
British-centric pairs in the proper names came from their site.
I'm sure there are more of these that I have not found yet. If you
find them first, feel free to let me know. Look at my taxonomy
webpages for how to contact me.
